Working Towards 1.0

We have good news and bad news. Against all conventions, let's start off with the good news: We've found time to add some long-awaited features to Punakea, like invoking the tagger with a global hotkey and a more reliable way of tagging the files. Best of all, we're now using Open Meta to store tags rather than those ugly Spotlight comments. We're planning to release some testable versions pretty soon, so stay tuned!

Now to a more serious issue: Beginning with 1.0, Punakea will not be free anymore. Some of you have donated -- we really appreciate that! -- but not nearly enough to even cover the cost of our web server. As you can imagine, doing our PhD studies doesn't pay a lot, and in fact, we're both pretty low on cash. We think that Punakea is mature enough to be worth some money, so this is not some sleazy cash-cow measure. We have thought long and hard about it, and rather than abandoning Punakea for good, we're going to try it this way. We'd be glad if you understand us, feel free to comment on this -- but don't expect us to change our minds unless some trees start to grow money ;)
