Aliases in tags folder are broken?

Hello,

I just started using Punakea.

I routinely tag new files where they're created -- which is usually the desktop -- and then move them to their ultimate destination. I'm finding that the Tags folder doesn't work at all; the aliases Punakea creates point to the original location (desktop) and don't seem to be updated.

This makes the Tags folder useless, which is a shame. It's especially weird because I can still search for the target file in Punakea (e.g. I go to 'All Items', click the tag in question, see the file appear in the bottom-right pane, and can double-click to open it) -- even though it's been moved.

Question: shouldn't aliases follow the original document? when I make an alias by hand, and then move the target document, the alias still works. What's going on here? Do I need to use "Move all files on tagging" / Managed Folders in order to use the automatically generated Tags alias hierarchy?

Thanks, Ben.

Hey Ben, you're right.

Hey Ben,

you're right. Aliases follow their originals. Punakea is currently not using aliases but symlinks, though. That's because we want to support access to the tags folder even in a shared environment with Windows computers.

What helps in your case: Go to Punakea's preferences, uncheck the Tags Folder, then enable it again. All symlinks are updated.

Sorry for that. There need to be some updates done to this... ;)

Cheers,
Daniel

Hi Daniel - Thanks very much

Hi Daniel -

Thanks very much for the reply. Checking and unchecking works -- but I guess it means I can't rely on the tags folder being up-to-date, unless I make sure to always move things before tagging them.

It's always bugged me that Windows shortcuts don't track the way aliases do! Oh well.

A couple very inelegant solutions come to mind, but I'd bet you've already thought about them all -- e.g. give user the option of choosing aliases vs symlinks, having Punakea automatically update the database periodically (every XX days, or ...) if needed, etc.

Anyway, thanks -- and thanks for Punakea. I've been enjoying getting to know it.

Ben.

Hey, you're right. At the

Hey,

you're right. At the moment the only safe combination is using the automatic-file-management feature along with the Tags Folder.

Generally, we're looking forward to a new backend to Punakea that fixes all these beta issues. ;)

Cheers,
Daniel
