couple issues; 1.04: some tags not showing up in music section, random single letter tags, faster renaming, colons in tags

currently on trial
a couple issues:

sometimes certain tags of music files don't show up in the music section of the browser. some other tags of the same files DO show up. rebuilding the library has helped before (as far as i can remember), but does not now.

sometimes tags consisting of single letters (that i didn't assign) show up (happened a couple times) in the browser, but there are no associated files.
rebuilding the library helps.

it would be nice if tags could be renamed easier/faster (eg with a right-click) than selecting the tag and changing the tags in all affected files.

is there no way to add a colon into tags? leap has this ability and also uses openmeta. if it has anything to do with having punakea manage folders (not using that at the moment/have not tried it), i mean, itunes allows colons in the metadata of its managed files and replaces them with underscores in the folders it creates, right?

using 10.5.8 and punakea 1.04. had 1.02 and 1.03 (rc2?) installed very shortly before if that is of any help.

Hey there, I'll address each

Hey there,

I'll address each issue in turn.

- Did you check if the tags are really on the music files? If so, please try a Spotlight DB rebuild (check our FAQ for a howto), and test again, that should solve the issue

- Others have reported that single-letter tag issue, it cropped up sporadically in past releases of Punakea - thought we fixed that, but will look at it again.

- A right click would be nice indeed - taken note

- The colon is a leftover from our pre-OpenMeta way of adding tags to files - we used a colon to seperate the tags in the Spotlight comments. Will fix that in the upcoming release.

Thanks for your feedback!
Johannes

thanks for the quick reply

thanks for the quick reply :)

missing files/tags in music browser: well, i rebuilt the spotlight index without avail, but the thing is, the files/tags DO turn up - but they turn up in "All Items", not in "Music". it does seem to be a bug or something because the files do turn up in "Music" when i browse to them with the other tags they have and the tags that appear to be missing when browsing "Music" show up in the "Show Info" pane/section.

random single letters: hm, i'm not actually sure if they came up in 1.04 or earlier as i had just updated, sorry.

renaming tags: doh, for some reason i overlooked the "Manage Tags" section, although i guess right-click renaming can still be useful when you want to rename only tags from one file type, and having a separate file type browser for managing tags would seem to be overkill.

by the way, i wanted to use the colons in a way to have a kind of manual hierarchy, as in "mood: upbeat", "tempo: slow" or "instrument: piano" or something like that so the tags are not all over the place. but i'm not sure yet if this is practical. it's organizing and cluttering at the same time. well, it'd be nice if in the future music files could be tagged with several entries for the same fields, but anyway.

a shortcoming i just discovered with this is that you have to type the whole name, eg "instrument - jazz guitar" in punakea's search field in order to find the tag. if you search for just "jazz guitar", nothing comes up.

Hm, this sounds strange.

Hm, this sounds strange. What you can do is stop Punakea, delete the '~/Library/Application Support/Punakea/tagCache.plist', and start Punakea again. This is where the tags are cached for the filetype - please tell me if that works.

The colon solution to classify the tags has been a long-standing idea we've been thinking about, but never came round to implement. If you do that 'manually', I think there will be too much clutter - but you can try and report if it works for you, would be very interesting :)

The search is prefix-only, meaning you have to start with the beginning of the tag - other options are on our todo-list already and will come soon.

Cheers,
Johannes

sorry for the late

sorry for the late reply.

yeah, that worked! thanks.

by the way, the random letters did come up in 1.04, after all, and i still have them in 1.05.

for now i have removed the manual classifiers again ; ).

i use punakea mainly for tagging music. it would be cool to have an option to send the selection to a punakea playlist (also with a keyboard shortcut!) (like quicksilver has its quicksilver playlist). but maybe that's too specific a use.

i also wanted to suggest a keyboard shortcut for resetting the tag search (that doesn't go to "all items"). then i thought, well, punakea is probably better to use with a mouse anyway. then i realized that i could type in tags without having to go to the search box, which is pretty cool. then i realized i could press enter and the tag would be selected. then i realized i could press delete and the last tag would be cleared! original inquiry answered. maybe option-delete could remove the whole word you're typing (like in other os x apps) if you decide against the tag after all?

and while i'm at it, since punakea only has five categories and the command+(number) key combinations aren't taken yet, how about command+1 to go to bookmarks (and so on)?

okay i need to stop with suggesting keyboard shortcuts haha. punakea is still faster to use with a mouse. and when browsing a string of tags it's also possible to remove a tag that's not the last with a mouse.

Hey broccoli, good to hear

Hey broccoli,

good to hear it worked, I hope it stays like this :)

Thanks for the keyboard shortcut suggestions - I put them on our todo list :)

Cheers
