Permanently delete / remove tags (Snow Leopard 10.6.3)

I have read the Support threads on not being able to delete tags, problems with Spotlight indexing, etc. A lot of them were posted in 2008 / 2009. I am hoping there is a fix now in Punakea 1.0.5. I recently deleted approx 20 tags out of 22 total. I was trying to basically start over with a whole new set of tags. There are two that won't delete. Nothing unique or special about them (e.g., compared to the 20 that did delete). I can create new tags, and delete the 2 stubborn tags while I work, but when I restart Punakea the 2 old unwanted tags reappear. Has this issue been resolved?

This happens if the tags on

This happens if the tags on the file are not correctly removed. If Punakea accesses a file, it re-reads and re-creates the tags on it - which is helpful in most cases.

The left-overs can have two causes:

  • You do not have write access to tagged files, thus Punakea cannot delete the tags from the files correctly - make sure you have write access to all files
  • Sometimes, Spotlight doesn't recognize a character in the tag, and Punakea fails to retrieve it when deleting it. What are the exact names of the tags that continue to re-appear?

I agree it would normally be

I agree it would normally be helpful to re-create tags -- great feature. But in this case I'd like to override this. The two tag names that won't (permanently) delete are:

1) Metadata_Taxonomies_Classifications
2) RFI_RFP Response

Could the 'underscore' character be part of the problem?

*** Also: there are no files currently associated with these two tags. When I click either tag in Punakea no files are returned.

Sorry for the late reply.

Sorry for the late reply. You should be able to delete tags with underscores - I just did it just to be sure :)

You can send us the tags file in ~/Library/Application Support/Punakea/DB, so that we can investigate. What you can also try is to re-create the Spotlight Index, perhaps there is something out of sync there (check our FAQ for a quick guide how to do that).

Tried it - didn't work. I

Tried it - didn't work. I recreated the Spotlight Index for my hard drive (as opposed to any single directory, per the Apple Support page). I'll send you my tags file. If you view the file and we still can't fix I'd like to do a full uninstall and reinstall. If it comes to that will my $25 license fee still be valid?

Hi dfunk, thanks for your

Hi dfunk,

thanks for your cooperation - I hope you received the fix I sent you by mail?

Your license will of course stay valid, no matter how often you install Punakea (or your OS, for that matter) :)
